Subject: Very unsual to see a passenger car among the freight. This unit was manufactured in the Bombardier plant in Thunder Bay, Ontario with final assembly in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Its destination is the Altamont Commuter Express rail service in California, which runs between Stockton and San Jose. This car travelled west across Canada and will likely enter the U.S. (Idaho) on the Kingsgate Sub to be picked up by Union Pacific. Photographed at mile 13 on the Cranbrook Sub, July 25/08.

Subject: This BNSF manifest is tied down in Shelby, Montana, waiting for a new crew. It is led by a pair of SD40-2's followed by an AC4400CW. The two SD40-2's are #1688 and #1689. Note the consecutive numbering, but different paint schemes. The AC4400CW is #5685. August 23, 2011.

Subject: The High Level Bridge was lit up on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. This bridge is the highest and longest of its type in the world. It measures 1839 meters long (1.14 miles) and sits 105 meters (344 feet) above the Oldman river bed. Construction began in 1907 and took 12,500 tonnes of steel. A CPR official stated that this bridge is good for another 100 years. Photo taken on September 5/09 in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Subject: I took this photo in 1955. This Canadian National locomotive appears to be a 2-8-2 Mikado series, working freight cars in front of the railway station in Kapuskasing, Ontario. The smoke stacks in the background are those of the Spruce Falls Power & Paper Company, which I was told at the time, supplied much of the newsprint to the New York Times.

Subject: This is a special occasion train, lead by CP2816. It was built by Montreal Locomotive Works as Hudson H1b #2816 (December, 1930). Retired in 1960 and sold to Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania in January 1964. Re-acquired by CP in 1998 and restored by BC Rail in North Vancouver to operational condition between 1999-2001. CP2816's tender came from Royal Hudson H1c #2822. CP2816 is used for special runs. This photo taken as the train was passing through Mile 94 of the Taber Sub, Alberta on August 27, 2006.

Subject: This is the Royal Canadian Pacific, Canadian Rockies LuxuryTour train. To quote the official website: "A witness to events that have shaped the world, and a conveyor of royalty, presidents, prime ministers and celebrities - the history of these Canadian Pacific Railway Carriages are legendary. The Royal Canadian Pacific's reputation as the world's most luxurious train has made it the preferred choice of travel to some of the most famous individuals of modern history. " This tour left Calgary, AB on June 2/06; spent the first night in Golden, B.C. and last night here, at Summit Lake in the Crowsnest Pass. This area, also known as "the Crow" in CPR circles, is the end of the Crowsnest Subdivision and the beginning of the Cranbrook Subdivision. This train will be travelling east on the Crowsnest Subdivision to Lethbridge, AB. Here is a sequence of eight photos (CP3084_1 to _8) that document this journey on June 4/06. Subject: This photo of the Royal Canadian Pacific was taken along mile 97 of the Crowsnest Sub. This is where the train crosses under Highway #3 before entering Sentinel on its way to Coleman, AB. The red locomotive, CP3131 is a last minute substitution for CP4101 which, according to one of the train personnel, "met an untimely death". It will take approximately one month to replace it with another locomotive painted in the classic maroon-and-gray-with-yellow stripes livery of the 1960s.

Subject: This photo of the Royal Canadian Pacific was taken June 4/06 at the location of the Frank Slide, mile 86 of the Crowsnest Sub. In the early morning hours of April 29, 1903, Turtle Mountain collapsed, resulting in the greatest landslide in North American history. In 100 seconds: at least 76 people were buried alive under tons of massive limestone boulders; three-quarters of the homes in Frank were crushed like balsa wood; over a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railroad was completely destroyed; and a river became a lake. Subject: The Royal Canadian Pacific on the Lethbridge High Level bridge. At 1839 metres (1.14 miles) long and 105 metres (344 feet) above the water, this is the longest and highest railway steel bridge in the world. It was completed in 1909. The haze in the sky is due to smoke from forest fires (wild fires) on the Washington-British Columbia border. September 7/06.
