There are three piers in the water for the L&NE Bridge and two for the
covered bridge. Remember there is probably twenty feet of steel work between
the top of the L&NE piers and the top deck of their bridge, and the bottom
steel work does not stand out as much as the top deck does. This gives an
elusion of just piers but believe me there is a bridge on top of them.
Check out some of the L&NE books for photo's of that bridge.

Bob,
I'm confused as well. In these pictures, there looks to be 4 bridge
piers (3 in the river) just in front of the LNE bridge. I thought those
were for the covered bridge where the pedestrian bridge is today. But,
thinking again, the covered bridge is behind the LNE. So what were these
4 piers for? Was there an earlier LNE bridge here too?
