Matthew -- Commuter consists arriving at Erie's Jersey City terminal would unload quickly [gotta get to work!] and back out, whappity-whappity-whappity, as fast as feasible; they had more trains than platforms, by a lot!, and needed the space. Trains backed into coach yards with engines on; sonner or later, after the rush, the locos were cut off, moved to the engine yard, turned, serviced and, eventually, placed on the opposite end of the consist -- often the same consist each pulled in the morning. All quite routine -- neccesary to move a lot of trains and people in limited space.
Diesels merely eliminated the turning step.
