Subject: Just after leaving Louisville KY en route E. St. Louis on Southern's line across Southern Indiana in January,1968--while we waited in a siding for a clear track, another freight at low speed split an iced switch and hit the front loco on our consist, which included an F unit just ahead of our loaded locomotive.

It was hours before the tracks were cleared of seven or eight cars that had toppled off the track when the jolt came. Had it been at high speed, the wreck might have altered the weekend of September 18-19, 2010, which the Monticello Railway Museum has now posted on its website as the official debut weekend for Southern Railway No. 401.

Subject: Just after leaving Louisville KY with Southern 401 loaded up on SOU 50901 enroute E. St. Louis, our standing train, waiting on a siding for clearance, was hit head-on by another train that split a snow-packed switch. We waited for the better part of a day for the crews to clear the resulting derailment and repair the tracks.

Subject: Here is a front shot of Southern 401 in the shops at the Monticello Railway Museum, Monticello IL, on August 19, 2010, one of the regular Thursday work sessions held year round. Following a 15-year restoration, the engine will run for the first time since 1964 in September.

Subject: Two of the heroes of the Southern Railway 2-8-0 No. 401 are Kent McClure (left) and Dave Marshall. When I asked Dave how the engine ran when he opened the throttle for the first time, he said it was like a Swiss watch, meaning it glided along with track without a sound. No clanking rods like regular engines.

Subject: Southern Railway 2-8-0 No. 401 is loaded until a railroad flat car at Margerum AL in January 1968 for its movement to the Monticello Railway Museum. Southern dispatched two steam powered cranes and crews for the lift, loading and tie-down of the engine as it moved through Huntsville, Chattanooga, Louisville and E. St. Louis on it way to Monticello. View No. 1.

Subject: A spare set up tires came along with the Southern 401 when it was loaded up in January 1966 in Margerum AL for movement to Decatur IL for unloading. Without a lift truck to pick them up, Guy Bald, superintendent of the Alabama Asphaltic Limestone Co. facility dragged them out of the shed they were stored in so they could be loaded on the flat with 401's tender. One tire is visible on the ground after extraction, with another one being ripped out through the side of the shed.

Subject: Southern Railway 401 sits in the shops where it is undergoing restoration on August 26, 2010 at the Monticello Railway Museum, Monticello IL. Is that a smile I detect on the smokebox front from this locomotive, which will likely return to service during Deptember 1020?

Subject: Following a successful test run on Friday, September 10, 2010, Southern Railway 401 was back in the shops with a list of things that needed to be corrected. None of them seemed monumental, and several were already checked off the list attached with a magnet to the tender.
