Subject: On Friday afternoon, September 17, Southern Railway steam locomotive No. 401 sat under the smoke jack in the engine house as wisps of smoke came out of the stack. Engine was fired up for final testing before Railroad Days at the Monticello Railway Museum and later took a two-car special with members aboard to the Lions Club Fish Fry downtown.

Subject: A million little details are involved in restoring a 1907 steam locomotive to operating condition, including the new steps that go adjacent to the pilot of Southern Railway No. 401 at the Monticello Railway Museum on August 19, 2010.

Subject: New pipes for Southern 401's sanders were bent around the tires of another steamer on hand at the Monticello Railway Museum, Monticello IL on August 19, 2010. Snagging one end of the pipe in the brake rigging, two volunteers wrapped it around the driver tire, later cutting the ends to fit up with the descending pipe from the sand dome.

Subject: While things are bustling in the steam shops as half a dozen mechanics work to get Souther Railway 301 ready for its debut next weekend, regular museum trains operated with CN 6789, an FPA-4, built in 1959. To the left is the former Deland IL Illinois Central depot now dubbed Nelson's Crossing after an original IT stop at the road.

Subject: Museum members on hand rode a special downtown to the Lions Club Fish Fry in the community build in Monticello IL. The restored Souther Railway No. 401 sat for about an hour in town as admiring spectators gathered around for pictures or just to look.

Subject: The front deck plate was plasma cut at Heritage Machine Shop in Bloomington IL to fit around the braces and the upper end of the front truck suspension, which slides up and down as the engine go into a curve, somehow adjusting the distribution of weight through a complicated levers and fulcrums (or so I was told).

Subject: Two of the heroes of the Southern Railway 2-8-0 No. 401 are Kent McClure (left) and Dave Marshall. When I asked Dave how the engine ran when he opened the throttle for the first time, he said it was like a Swiss watch, meaning it glided along with track without a sound. No clanking rods like regular engines.

Subject: Last time I went to Monticello the pilot was a skeleton and mechanics were debating how to get both the crimped end and the right angle to make the boiler tubes flay out in the proper (and symetrical) direction. They obviously figured it out and the result looks perfect.

Subject: Following a successful test run on Friday, September 10, 2010, Southern Railway 401 was back in the shops with a list of things that needed to be corrected. None of them seemed monumental, and several were already checked off the list attached with a magnet to the tender.
