Found book-map on page 19: the map highlights these in Manhattan:
155th, 116th, 59th, 53rd,42nd, 23rd, 14th, Rector, South Ferry.
These are on the west side (8th Ave) El. It reads as follows on the map =
for 53rd St Station: "Baggage Sta./53 St & 8 Ave"
The bridge to 155th built 1880, service began 1881, called West Side =
and Yonkers Ry...Fare to cross bridge 5 =A2...merged into NYC&N 1887, =
then NYC&N reorganized into NY&N...(1882 saw trains first go via NY&NE =
to Hartford and connection to Boston)
.Freight was transferred from High Bridge by Barge to Pier 44 on Lower =
East Side....This was at the foot of Rutgers St....(just north of =
Manhattan Bridge today)...Through service to Boston continued by NYC =
with connection with NH until 1907.(NYC took over NY&N 1894)
IRT leased bridge for 999 years in 1916....9th Ave. El ended June 11, =
1940...Giants moved 1957, Put stopped passengers 1958, bridge and =
shuttle removed....
No other mention of the baggage station....It would be interesting to =
see photo of that station-maybe in NY Times back then?
