Re: (erielack) Latest Diamond - Single E-units on passenger trains

I would think one unit on the west end for 5&6 would be OK. I didn't remember ever having one unit. But it could have happened. In those days fuel was cheap the units were getting old, (E-8's) and shot. Two units will give you a faster take off. And there's Pocono Summit. 5&6 were so light by then, I don't think it mattered. Today it's all about cost. We have no back up systems today. If 5 & 6 were running today. It would have one unit west of Scranton! If something went wrong on our single track railroad, we'd just tie everything up and out law all the train crews behind us, a freight behind us would have to cut off his power and shove us in the clear somewhere, until the buses came. If buses could be found. Lance

The EL Thru-line passenger books by John Boehner show a lot of single E's on the
est end when there was often only a baggage, coach, and diner. Now I know why
he Lake Cities often ran with the two E's "elephant" style when coming into
oboken. I think they cut off the second engine at Youngstown. A couple of
ays a week trains 5&6 did travel all the way to Chicago with two coaches with
he diner to Huntington. On those days two E's were used.

Steve, Rich,
I guess my ignorant brain was just thinking that the railroad would
lmost always want to use two locomotives on a through passenger
rain for protection in case one breaks down, not that it would be
ikely to happen where the EL was concerned. Nevertheless,
tuff happens, you know?

gree, but I don't recall that we ever took a unit off at Marion. Perhaps
KR can comment on that. I know we removed diners, extra coaches and
ansfield mail cars to save terminal costs at Chicago but I don't recall
utting the rear unit off at Marion and adding it going east. Not saying we
idn't but I don't recall it.
