(erielack) DL&W Trainmasters in lieu of E8's in passenger service

Fellow ELHS members John Swiecki asked if I could pose the following interesting question for him:  
 

Were the Lackawanna Trainmasters ever used in passenger service if the E-8's were not available?

 

Somewheres I think I read that they even pinch hit on the Phoebe Snow a time or two.

 

Can you confirm?
