Re: (erielack) EL HOLIDAY

Well SP was in the OIL and pipeline business Also SPrint telephone. I don't think the Erie had any oil fields they owned. But they did go to Oil City, PA A newspaper man once said, after riding the "Sunset Limited" That he never saw the sun set on anything more limited in his life! It was down to two coaches. All the way from New Orleans to LA. They made a deal with the ICC that if they restored the diner and sleeper they could only run it three days aweek. That was 40 years ago. That's the way it's run today! Three days of income, seven days of expenses! I guess there was talk of running The "Lake Cities" three days aweek. But the Erie wanted out.

Rumors I believe to be true said "When the Erie took over the Lackawanna, they would be out of the passenger business in ten years." 1960 to 1970 seems pretty true. I think it was understood they meant the intercity business. But getting out of the REAL loser the commuter business, I'm sure would have been fine too! Lackawanna Lance

I can remember DL&W and EL both decorating Hoboken terminal with a rather larger
hristmas Tree in the main waiting room. My aunt told me she saw a tree in the
avern Lounge of the "Phoebe" once. For a company that had marginal passenger
ervice and could have easily downgraded everything like, say the Southern
acific did, they kept the service first class. During the Thanksgiving-New
ears period, did they issue special menus in their diners? Does anybody
emember what travel during this time of the year was like. The crew of the
erry "LACKAWANNA" used to decorate it with a banner and a tree with lights
ehind one of the pilot houses.
I was looking at the latest DIAMOND and noticed the black and white picture of
rie locomotives and one DL&W Trainmaster at Hoboken. This was taken in March
f 1958. Within a year or so, DL&W would have pulled all of the TM's out of
assenger service replacing them usually with F3 A units running back to back.
hat gave the Boonton Line trains an air of class but I missed the deep roar of
he TMs. I hope somebody recorded that sound. I wanted to record the CNJ TMs
nd kept putting it off until they were gone - missed opportunity.
Hope you're enjoying the season!
