  I recall that "Haywire Mac" was actually a man named Harry Bedwell 
who I believe was a dispatcher for the Southern Pacific. He did write 
railroad stories and Hubbard published several of them. The fact that 
the person you are referring to  uses the initials "H.B." might be an 
indication that they are one in the same.
