Re: (erielack) Portage Bridge near Hornell



Most of the time it's referred to as the Portageville viaduct.  Lots of 
pictures of it in books and online.


This is just a dumb question, but one has to wonder how much cheaper it 
would be to simply close the line and reroute the existing through traffic, 
while replacing the bridge itself with some kind of modular structure from 
pre-built components assembled elsewhere and installed on the site in the 
same location as the current structure.

I can think of at least a dozen ways to run trains around that location, 
from reasonable to rediculous, but down the PRR Buffalo Line to Olean and 
east on the WNY&P probably makes the most sense.

When it was still Conrail and D&H down there, Conrail would just send their 
trains right to Albany on the Chicago Line if there was a problem of some 
sort, a wreck or major trackwork.
