Re: (erielack) NY Harbor Interchange (was: CNJ Interchange)

Tim,

I'm interested in seeing what the deal was. Stranger things have happened in the sometimes bizarre world of railroads.

Thanks for the correction on it being 26th Street. I am quite certain it lasted beyond C-day. I don't remember why, but there was some legal or contract issue that kept it going for a little while. There was an article about this in the RMIG "Transfer" - I'll have to dig it out.

    Tim,

B&O's facility was at 26th St; Erie/EL's was at 28th St. I doubt the B&O's lasted into the Conrail era. Chessie tracks ended at Philadelphia; it entered the NY area via RDG-CNJ, both of which were incorporated into Conrail in April 1976.

I think the B&O's 28th Street float operation in Manhattan lasted until 1977.

EL and LV were the last NJ-based trunklines to use carfloats in NY harbor, interchanging with the Long Island at LI City and the Brooklyn-based shortlines until C-day. Conrail was able to discontinue this operation because it had the all-rail route via Selkirk.

As to what Paul asked, by the time of the Poughkeepsie Bridge burning, the practice of interchage via carfloat was so mortibund along with the railroads that did required using it (not to mention the poor shape of the equipment needed to do so) was so small, it really didn't matter. Heck, it didn't take Conrail long to abandon all marine activities, so that should just go to show how little it mattered by then.
