I think your plan will work.  The Station Restaurant is very good, although
a little pricey (figure $15 for lunch).  It used to be called the Phoebe
Snow and was really a bargain.  As Paul said you will be 50 feet away when
you get off the train.  If you have time to kill after lunch there is a
Lionel dealer across Midvale Road from the station.

Sadly the neat little station at Great Notch is gone, all that is left is a
5 person plastic bus shelter.  The Boonton station is intact but the inside
has been, ah let's just say modified.  Your view from the train will
probably be best.
