Hello, I was wondering if the author who posted the orginal message about the Erie Middletown dept was aware that Thrall Library encompases both the original passenger station and a modern annex. My theory for the reason for the imposing structure, which replaced an earlier station, is because it was recognition by the Erie of the contributions made by the citizens of Middletown. In the 1840s, the citizens of Middletown took it upon themselves to establish the Middletown Association to raise the additional funds for extending the line the 7.3 miles from Goshen to Middletown. The Association entered into an agreement with the ER that the railroad would lease the right-of-way so long as latter would in time purchase the line. I had never been in Middletown proper, only to stores along the Rt 17 corridor. I saw the old O&W depot on the way in and someone I met at the show walked me to the Erie depot during a break. I was struck by the relative magnificence of that Erie structure compared to other Erie stations. Ridgewood with all its money also merited a Spanish mission station -- but it was much smaller and far less architectually imposing. Tuxedo with its millionaires got a small stone station and no Chicago trains that stopped there. What did Middletown have to warrant that depot? The person I was with suggested corporate machismo -- that with two other RRs in town including the O&W with its huge building, the Erie needed to make a statement. Any thoughts?
