It has been UNIVERSITY for quite some time, Tim.

Great Notch is a bit of a problem: only two trains stop westbound, at 5:52 and 6:23 pm, and one eastbound, at 8:42 am. If you want to visit by train only, you'll be there all day and you'll have to come via Denville, as most service is still peak-hour oriented: east in the morning, west in the afternoon and evening.

It is possible to walk between Great Notch and Montclair State along US 46 and Notch Road, but there are no sidewalks. I would expect it to take less than a half hour - do NOT walk along the railroad.

NJT bus service is also available at Great Notch, routes 191, 195, 705 between the Port Authority Bus terminal and Wayne and Stockholm, with some service on the 11 and 28 routes to Willowbrook Mall. The 705 goes between Passaic and Willowbrook also. Train tickets are NOT accepted on buses.

New timetables, effective August 3 (SUNDAY), are available at: http://www.njtransit.com

The off-peak track work (concrete ties and rail replacement between Denville and Montclair State) is complete; regular train service will resume Monday - there is no weekend service.

Other than the temporary (less than three months) bustitution, service on the Boonton line is always by train.
