RE: (erielack) Prattsburg Railway

ListThe Prattsburgh Railway Corporation (note the "h") operated an 11.44 mile line from a connection with the Erie's Rochester Division at kanona to Prattsburgh NY. The PRC was incorporated 9 March 1917 as the successor thru foreclosure to the Kanona & Prattsburgh Railway Company, which, in turn, was incorporated 14 April 1897 as successor to the Kanona & Prattsburgh Railroad Company, incorporated in Apr 1888 and opened its line 12 Oct 1889. The K&P operated 4 passenger trains each way across its line until the '20's when it cut back to 3. Passenger service ceased in 1927 (replaced by the wholly owned Prattsburgh Bus Corporation) with a Prattsburgh-Wheeler-Kanona-Bath route, which ceased c. 1961. Freight service continued until c. 1959 with an embargo and dismantling in 1961. The road originally was a fairly general agricultuual traffic, including a milk connection to the Erie, but in later years it was noted for reefer loads of potatoes and other crops grown in the black muck of Prattsburgh. An abandonment was proposed c. 1940 but the black muck farmlands were just coming on line and the PRC had some of its best ever traffic and financial years in the period 1940-1955. Unlike the neighborning B&H the Erie never controlled the K&P/PRC. I am laboring (slowly) to put a good history of this road out but its photographing and engineering records are sparse.M J Connor> Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2006 06:23:14 -0700> From: tjdean108_@_yahoo.com> Subject: (erielack) Prattsburg Railway> To: erielack@lists.elhts.org> > just bought a lot of old Erie tickets and in the lot is a ticket for the> Prattsburgh Railway from Wheeler to Dineharts. urgh (the Kick & Push to locals) it was reorganized under the Prattsburgh Railway name. The best coverage & photos can be found in William Reed Gordon's book Keuka Lake Memories which is long out of print but can be found in libraries in western NY.> > Terry Dean> > > > The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List> Sponsored by the ELH&TS> http://www.elhts.org
