Re: (erielack) Re: UPS Trailers

Paul,
I always remember Seacaucus, but N. Bergen obviously was there too. Let's pose the question to the list since I don't know.

Fred,

What about the terminal location question (Secaucas vs N Bergen)?

Paul, Actually the PC suffered alot in the intermodel area. Thay did have the Flexi-Van service and Trailvan, but one of the reasons UPS went with the EL was that they had prior negtive experience with the PC. The EL was willing to change it's schedule to accomodate UPS trains. In 1970 the EL started with 1 EB and 1 WB UPS train. This grew in by 1974 to 5 UPS trains daily on the EL The increase of UPS reliability in getting between the 2 endpoints (Chicago-NY) was at the expense of the USPS and REA. They lost revenue while at this time the UPS was expanding. When I was growing up in northern NJ UPS was mainly on the scale of the USPS and REA, it wasn't until later on that they started getting into the larger trailers from what I can remember.

Fred,

Bill Sheppard made reference to the UPS hub in North Bergen. Did it relocate there from Secaucas at some point? USPS traffic fell abruptly by two-thirds in 1970; I'm guessing much of it went to PC (or to all-hiway).

Let me see, I do remember one thing. My dad told me that as you know it was a priority tran and when it was close to Croxton everything was dropped to give it that priority. I aslo remember being at Croxton one day when NY 100 was coming in and seeing a line of UPS cabs/tractors lined up ready to grab the trailers as soon as they were ready. Croxton was strategically located in JC. The USPS facility was across the street and UPS was about a mile away on County Road in Seacaucus. As far as consists I'll have to rack my brain. I personally do remember late model power, IE: 6 axle SDP-45's and U33C's mixed with an occasional 4 axle GP35 orU25B.

Fred,

Do you recall any other facts about handling of UPS traffic at Croxton that might be useful for my article?

Paul is right. My late DAD was Eastbound Clerk in Croxton and he would tell me how 2nd/NY 100 was almost a dedicated UPS train whereas NY100 was not. To substantiate this, look at many a pictures of NY100 and you can see. Good point Paul.

>Actually the 85' cars were common throughout the 70's, although after 1964 all the builders switched to an 89-90' deck. So any of these flats would work; you could even work in a few single-hitch cars of 50-53' length owned by EL or Trailer Train. The Accurail cars are indeed a scale 6" too wide, which of course is barely noticable; they have a few other minor deficiencies which I
discussed a couple of months ago. Hopefully the upcoming Walthers release will be more accurate than Accurail's. If you can find some of the Walthers 89' channel-side cars, they'd be fine also.
>
>A minor point here: NY-100 was not a UPS schedule, although it often carried one or two empty UPS trailers back to Croxton (UPS traffic was primarily wb). The primary UPS trains were Second/NY-100, ACX-99 and CX-99.

are the 89' piggyback flats from Accurail. Apparently, these are a few scale inches too wide, but it's not too noticable.

>Athearn has re-released its 85' "all-purpose" piggyback flat, which will also work with the UPS trailers they make, but the 85' cars were far less common on these trains.
