Adding to the thread on West End track conditions, here is a historic train order restricting all trains to 40MPH. Most of you probably know this was modified by special instruction in the employee timetable alllowing certain trains to run 50 MPH at specific locations. Timetable No. 3 for the Scranton, Susquehanna, Buffalo, Mahoning and Marion Divisions dated March 21, 1971 shows NE74, BN74, PB100, RI100, SFE100, NY100, NY Cannonball, A/NY99, NY99, CX99, NE99, PB99, 2nd NY100, and the St. Louis Cannonball allowed 50 MPH.

Note the date on the train order: Feb. 5, 1970, a month after discontinuance of No. 5 & 6, The Lake Cities. A few days ago WDB posted some reasons why Mr. Maxwell lowered the speed limit to 40 MPH. One wonders if the end of long distance passenger service may have also been a reason as there was no need to maintain the West End up to passenger train standards.
