Re: (erielack) E-unit wheels



I knew an EMD man (now deceased) who was assigned to Marion OH.  He 
mentioned the changes made, was just re-gearing and going to 38" wheels, 
apparently the 2 inch difference wasn't a major problem in draft gear 
adjustment for coupler alignment.  The BIG problem was E units would NOT 
reverse transition automatically with the freight units so equipped. They 
WOULD auto transition UP but not back as speed decreased. EL put out Special 
Directives covering this problem and outlining steps to properly operate the 
units in such consists in freight service. I sure wish I could locate a copy 
of those instructions, but I've never seen one as they never sent any to 
Scranton. (The directives) And in fact E's were few and far between in 
freight service through Scranton, although I have seen the pics from 
Starucca and Moodna Viaduct.

Another little known item was before EL in 1956-57 Perry Shoemaker DL&W 
Pres. Asked EMD for bids on a double Cab E8 for commuter service.  They 
declined....
