(erielack) re: (PA's on the) Northern

Earlier, I wrote that freight still runs on the Northern.

In fact, the southern several miles are now CSX's mainline -- the south end of the River Line. A junction in North Bergen, where the West Shore, Northern and Susquehanna all -- even now! -- run parallel, allows River Line trains to bypass the tunnel into Weehawken and the pilferage-prone line down to National Junction in Jersey City. Traffic now moves onto the Northern, down toward Croxton, up and over the ex-Erie and DL&W main lines, and on to Marion Junction with the ex-Pennsy Exchange Place line from Marion to Kearney and Oak Island.

Just contemplate: a wrong switch could have a northbound double stack thundering up through Tenafly!
