CAPTION by Randy Brown:

Erie PA and 2 Stillwells on the Northern Railroad of NJ, summer or early
fall, 1957. The train is coming north out of Englewood, and is climbing
one of the Northern's two grades, toward Tenafly. Probably Saturday,
because I was working days, making it train 1253, the evening run to
Nyack. Or, if I was on vacation, it could have been the last weekday
train, 1205, which also ran with two cars.

I have one other picture of a PA and a half-dozen or more Stillwells,
but I can't tell if it's the same day's 1251 or weekday 1203. 1251 was
the midday run and usually had more cars, mainly because they used the
weekday consists and that was the middle train. The first down, last up
was a gas electric and two Stillwells for years; this 1253 is its
replacement.

Turning these two monsters around on the Armstrong turntable at Nyack
must have been an experience. Perhaps they ran them -- backwards (!?!)
the four miles to Sparkill, wyed them and ran them backwards (?!?) back
to Nyack. There were only a couple of grade crossings, but it would
have made me real nervous. I don't recall ever seeing the PA's again on
the Northern.
