Re: (erielack) Jersey City Passenger Terminals

Alan,

The Jersey Central terminal was the southern most passenger terminal in
Jersey City. RDG and B&O had trackage rights into the terminal, but the CNJ
built it. Going north you'd hit the Pennsy at Exchange Place, then the Erie
on the other side of Harsimus Cove and then the Lackawanna, which is just
over the border in Hoboken. The H&M's southern end was at Exchange Place, so
the CNJ connection was only via ferry. "Rails under the Mighty Hudson" is a
great history of the H&M, and it indicates the Pennsy stopped all ferry
service from Exchange Place in 1950, used the station till at least 1957 for
trains (steam powered) to Bay Head junction down the North Jersey Coast, and
abandoned Exchange Place in 1961.

The following in a Rail-Marine site, with tons of info on car-floats and
marine operations. May or may not be a harbor map as I've only looked around
some it of. www.2pb.ip-soft.net/railinfo/car-floats/

The best harbor map I've seen for NY Harbor is a copy of a Port Authority
map in Tom Flagg's book on NYC car float operations. It shows all the
terminals as well as all the freight yards and car float points.

TTFN,
Rich Chapin
