(erielack) re:Jersey City terminals



Alan -- If you can find a good current map of Jersey City, it will help.  From South to North: 
  CNJ [also used by RDG and B&O] -- now Liberty State Park 
  PRR
  ERIE [also used by NYS&W]
JC/Hoboken city line
  DL&W

Path served all but the CNJ.  Coming east from Newark, Path runs along the old PRR line to Journal Square and Exchange Place and on under the river to the WTC.  Used to go to Hudson Terminal, in Erie days -- a little further inland from WTC -- and it may again.

At Exchange Place, a line turns left, runs north to Hoboken, turns riht and ends under the north side platforms of the DL$W terminal. A station at Pavonia Avenue "served" the Erie terminal but, because Path is so far inland, it was quite a hike from the Path to the Erie.

Of course, it was the Hudson & Manhattan [H&M] "Tubes" then.

Between Pavonia Avenue ["Erie"] and Hoboken, the 33rd Street line turned east, went under the river, and zig-zagged north more or less between 6th and 7th Avenues to Herald Square, where it dead-ended under the intersection of 6th, Broadway and 33rd Street.  It had stops along the way at, like, Vesey St, 19th St, 23rd St.

There was service from Journal Square via Exchange Place to down town or, via Erie, to uptown or, via Erie, to Hoboken; from Hoboken to uptown or, via Erie and Exchange Place, to downtown.  Through runs from Newark went downtown.  It was easy to get on the wrong train!

And then, 'way up in Weehawken, there was the NYC's West Shore terminal, used also by NYO&W, with only ferry connection to Manhattan, unless you used a bus. :=(

PS: Moodna Viaduct crossed Moodna Creek.  Why "Moodna?"  I dunno; ask an Indian.
