Paul---(East Ender)----------
That photo of the 1159-1158 is great! I started on the Mahoning Divn in June
of 65 and had forgotten that these beasts were used at Niles! They are on
the Lisbon Branch that ran from Niles to Lisbon. The branch was 33.2 miles
in length and train #271 was due back into Niles at 5:30pm. It must have been
running as an "Extra" on this day as due to the shadow from the pole and the
amount of daylight it must have been about 4pm. It appears that the photo
was taken at about MP 32.5 coming into Niles. The above is true if it is in
fact a Westbound. Looks like that boxcar was business out of American Fire
Clay that made fire brick for the steel industry at Marquis, Ohio. Reviewing
a EL EMP TT for that period, the branch was 30 MPH then!!!!!!!
The entire Lisbon Branch is gone now, save for about 1/3 mile at Leetonia
that NS uses as an M of W spur----called the Erie North. The EL crossed the
PRR at Leetonia Tower by coming onto the main line of the PRR and using the
crossovers and then breaking back off the PRR, rather than the usual crossing
frogs.
Great photo.
