Re: (erielack) H&M to GCT, was PATH question

But the size of the Stillwells on both Erie and NYW&B would have
required entirely new H&M tunnels under the Hudson. Although there
were many ideas for the NYW&B, only one really came close to
fruition -- a scheme to run their trains across the Hell gate to
Hunterpoint Avenue in the mid 1920s. Others are about as credible as
those maps of Henry Norton's running a monorail out to Paterson.

The Stillwell design was a good one -- relatively lightweight
considering the materials and construction knowhow available at the
time of their design (pre aluminum and pre stainless and eons before
shotweld). But their unique appearance should not be misread into
thinking there was some grand scheme involved in their use by their
several users in the NY area.

BTW, there's a fellow -- Terry Kennedy -- planning a book of maps on
the "Unbuilt Lines of the H&M" which will certainly answer many of
these questions. For a taste of some of the stuff he's working on,
try:

These maps actually involve the CNJ branch in particular.

Cheers,
Jim
