Some of us remember it very well. We also remember the result.

The railroads essentially operated most passenger services as a "loss
leader" for many years -- and you'll find that they all recognized --
despite best efforts -- that passenger service is a loser (leading to
Vanderbilt's famous "The Public be Damned" line).
