Friday morning Tammy and I head for Buffalo. On a whim I decided to try another westbound shot from the I-90 overpass at the east end approach to Colinwood Yard.
There is frequently a string of coal gons sitting here, often with BNSF 70MACs at one end. This is looking west toward Collinwood at the CP-171 signal bridge.

To begin the day of Railfanning we arrive at the Hamburg Model RR Station which was the Erie's Hamburg Depot.
There is a bunch of Western NY Railway Historical Society owned equipment parked here and today the Buffalo Southern has also provided us with Alco S2 105.

The Society's Penssy I1 Decapod, 4483, has resided here behind the depot for a number of years.
While mostly stabilized from further rust damage, it's a long way from any sort of restoration.

After browsing the model RR equipment at the Station for a while we move along to the Lakeview Rd. grade crossing at MP 14.37.
Here westbound Q161-23 with SD70MAC 768 leading JB Hunt pigs approaches the grade crossing after getting a clean bill of health from the Bayview Detector.

Pan shot of the 768 at Lakeview Rd.
Q161 runs between Little Ferry, NJ and Chicago TOFC Yard, usually leaving very early in the morning Monday through Friday. This one got out of Little Ferry at 12:30 AM.

Q161 has the high green on Track 1 at the WB CP-15 signal, where track 3 from Buffalo finally ends and it's double track from here to the siding at CP-31 in Silver Creek.

Next up is westbound Q391-24 out of Buffalo for Stanley Yard in Toledo. It's just just around the bend from the CP-13 signals approaching Lakeview Rd.
Note the difference in radiator "wing" thickness between the CSX and Conrail C40-8W's.

Pan shot of C40-8W 7677 on Q391. You can almost feel the speed even though it is decelerating!

Q391-24 has a red over flashing green aspect at the CP-15 Track 3 WB signal indicating that it will be moving onto Track 2.
This perspective gives a good view of the plant at CP-15 and the grade profile leading up to the crossovers.
Note how Track 3 curves around the Track 1 signal mast before joining with Track 1.

We move west to CP-17 at the stub end of Depot Street near Sturgeon Point Rd.
Depot St. used to cross the tracks and run right between CR and NS, but it was blocked off on the west side of the Conrail tracks several years ago.
Here Q268-24 led by spartan cabbed C40-8 7577 hustles auto-racks east between the signals.
Q268 is a daily run between Collinwood Yard and the auto ramps at Doremus, NJ.

On the way into Angola we had to stop to shot this Speeder Truck for obvious reasons!
While not an original CNJ MoW vehicle, this RV does look great.

After waiting by Main Street in Angola for over a half hour we finally got westbound Q109-24 with C40-8W 9052 in the lead splitting the CP-21 signals.
Not only do these signals have snow covers over their lenses, but while the EB Track 2 signal displays high green, the WB Track 2 signal on the other side displays yellow over red and all four sets of signals stay on, they aren't approach lit!

We made our way west to Alleghany Road in Irving, NY just in time to catch loaded Q387-24 with C40-8W 7793 storming westbound through the Track 1 Cattaraugus Creek through truss bridge.
Q387 runs daily between Buffalo and the UP at Proviso Yard just on the other side fo Chicago.

AC44 5009 leads Q364-23 eastbound at CP-28 on Track 2 approaching the Irving HBD/DED.
Q364 originates at Avon Yard in Indianapolis and runs up the Big Four line to Cleveland then on to Selkirk Yard for an all NYC routing.
This train left Avon at 10:44 PM on Friday and made Selkrik at 10:40 PM Saturday, almost exactly one day end to end. It would have been Conrail train INSE which frequently saw SD80MACs on the head end.

Lone BNSF C44-9W 4531 leads Q284-24 eastbound at CP-28 with a solid block of Auto-Max articulated auto racks, the first time I have seen these in a unit train configuration.
Q284 runs only as required from Chicago to Buffalo via Willard and Berea and is apparently a dedicated Auto-Max train. Q293 is its westbound counterpart.

Going away shot of the Q284 passing through the Track 2 truss bridge over Cattaraugus Creek.

Spartan cab C40-8 7503 leads G638-23 eastbound at CP-28.
G638 is a Chicago to Selkirk grain train. This train left Chicago at one minute before midnight on the 23rd and arrived in Selkirk at one minute after midnight on the 25th and spent 38 minutes at Frontier Yard in Buffalo.

The Model RR Club of Buffalo Safety Safari crew of Jim Brooks and Bruce Kaufman met us out at Alleghany Road to make sure we were practicing "Safe CSX"
I can't repeat here what a carload of teenagers said they looked like!

Westbound Q279-24 with AC44 31 on the point hustles across Cattaraugus Creek on Track 1 with a block of autoracks for Pottersburg, OH.
This train left Selkirk at 5:45 AM and made Pottersburg at 11 PM after an hour and a half stop at Seneca Yard in Buffalo.
Once again there's obvious room for Track 4 on the Track 2 through truss. No doubt both bridges are still used to allow acceptable load limits in conjunction with deferred maintenance.

Q279-24, with VMV rebuild SD40-2 8449 trailing AC44 31, is about to hit the Alleghany Road grade crossing near CP-28 with its auto racks stretching through the truss bridge and around the curve in the distance.

Ex-CR C40-8W 7342 in YN2 paint leads sister 7779 and AC60 664 on eastbound Q116-24 across Hanford Road at MP 29.53.
Q116 runs from Rose Lake, IL to Beacon Yard in Boston, MA. These same units had made the trip west on counterpart Q115 from Beacon to Rose Lake via Indianapolis the day before.

Intermodal Q116-23's power hits the Track 2 HBD/DED at MP 28.90, just west of Alleghany Rd.
Note the Conrail Blue cab-signal box just behind the cab of C40-8W 7342.

Going away shot of the Q116-23 gives a good view of AC60 664 and its radial trucks as well as the distance from the Alleghany Road grade crossing to the Cattaraugus Creek bridges.
I have really liked this spot for railfanning since the first time I was here several years ago.

Two and a half miles down Rt. 5 is Silver Creek, another great railfanning location.
Eastbound Q390-23 with UP C44-9W 9744 leading UP C40-8 9189 and UP SD90 8534 rounds the bend by the Silver Creek "Railfan Spot" at MP 32 on Track 2.
Track 3 in the weeds was used fairly often in Conrail days. Somewhere buried in there is a stub siding which was used by MoW equipment.
