Jack Trowill will speak on “The History of Berkshire Railroads”
- - January 23, 2007
Return to the heyday of trains and trolleys rumbling through the
Berkshires at a series of free illustrated talks on railroading
beginning February 4 at 2 p.m. at Western Gateway Heritage State Park in
North Adams, MA. The series is a collaborative effort by the MA
Department of Conservation and Recreation, North Adams Historical
Society, North Adams Public Library and Berkshire Scenic Railway. All of
the talks will be held in the Shipper’s Office of the Visitors’ Center.
Refreshments will be served.
Jack Trowill will speak on “The History of Berkshire Railroads” His
grandfather, father and an uncle all worked for the Pennsylvania
Railroad with some 100 years of combined service. His lifelong interest
in railroading has led to research on the chronology of Berkshire lines
as well as the history of the Lenox, MA station. He has been a volunteer
with Berkshire Scenic Railway in Lenox since 1985. He has served at
various times as curator, trainman, director and other positions. In the
event of inclement weather, the talk will be held on February 11.
The other talks in the series are February 18 John Hyde “Down at the
Depot: The Railroad Station in American Life; March 4 Jerry Kelley
“Lining Towers of the Hoosac Tunnel”; and March 18 Kinsley Goodrich “The
Berkshire Street Railway: Trolley Systems of the Berkshires.” In the
event of inclement weather, the talks will be held the following Sunday
at 2 p.m.
The park is located on Route 8 between State and Furnace Streets. For
