BELLOWS FALLS -- A morning fire destroyed a building near the train station
Thursday.
And while it took less than an hour to get it under control, the fire
department is still trying to track down the owner.

Bellows Falls Fire Chief Bill Weston said the low-slung shed was filled with
desks, machinery, bails of paper and other unidentifiable objects. He
estimated the loss at $50,000.

"We asked the railroad, and they don't own it," Weston said. "We thought the
paper company might have owned it but they said 'no.' It's still a gray
area. We're checking other avenues."

Conditions all over Windham County were windy and dry, Thursday.

A witness at the scene said there were reports of people fleeing the fire,
and Weston said Vermont State Police is investigating.

The 65-by-18-foot shed was about 120 feet from a nearby building. Weston
said train service nearby was halted to allow hoses over the tracks.

The call for the fire came into the Bellows Falls station at 10:49 a.m. and
Weston said it was under control at 11:23 a.m.

The two-alarm blaze brought departments from Rockingham, Saxtons River,
Westminster, Springfield, and from Walpole and Charlestown in New Hampshire.

Golden Cross Ambulance also responded.
