Re: (rshsdepot) Re: RSHSDepot Digest V1 #1333

Paul,

Just one small correction to Mr. Mitchell's response. "...which conveniently predates the line's acquisition by the NYS&W ca. 1984-85."

NYS&W never acquired the line from Conrail. They did gain the right to run "Haulage trains" and did so, even as Conrail continued to run its own trains over the line. Ownership of the line transferred to Norfolk Southern as part of the NS/CSX purchase of Conrail. Subsequently NS leased the portion from Suffern NY to Port Jervis, NY to Metro-North Commuter RR and the section from Port Jervis, NY to Binghamton, NY was leased to the NYS&W.

I believe to the end of Conrail, at least one daily Conrail train was still traversing the line. This train, OIBU (Oak Island - Buffalo) and its counterpart BUOI, were in effect long-distance locals. When NS took over the line they stopped running through trains to Binghamton. The line between Suffern and Port Jervis is still served by NS for freight service, based out of Campbell Hall, NY. NS now serves Campbell Hall with a long distance local out of Allentown, PA.

Probably more than you wanted to know.
