NEWARK - In preparation for the fall opening of the long-awaited Secaucus
Transfer Station, additional trains will begin running April 27 on several
lines, NJ Transit said Thursday.Weekend service will inaugurate the $450
million station in the Meadowlands at the junction of the Northeast Corridor
and Main lines. It links 11 of the 12 NJ Transit commuter rail lines.

Full service is planned for the end of the year, when a replacement PATH
station opens at the site of the destroyed World Trade Center.

The PATH station must be completed first or Northeast Corridor trains
operating to and from New York Penn Station probably would be too
crowded. The extra trains are being started in anticipation of greater
demand, NJ Transit spokeswoman Penny Bassett Hackett said. Among the
changes:

*-Four new express trains on the Northeast Corridor for morning and evening
rushes, and two late-night trains departing Penn Station in New York.

*-Weekend travelers on the Northeast Corridor will have three additional
Saturday trains, and 11 more on Sunday.

*-Riders on the Montclair-Boonton Line will now transfer to Midtown Direct
at a platform at the site of the future Montclair State University Station
in Little Falls. The station is to be completed in spring 2004.

*-The Montclair-Boonton line will also have an additional train from
Denville to Hoboken.
