Charlton appealing to Jenkins for tree aid

Attempts to save a historic train depot on West State of Franklin Road as
well as a grove of old beech trees across from Johnson City Medical Center=

are both on the agenda for tonight=92s meeting of the Johnson City City
Commission=2E=20

The historic CSX train depot on the corner of West State of Franklin and
Buffalo Street, which is the last remaining of the old depots in the city,=

has fallen into disrepair, and the railroad had planned to tear it down=2E=

But local outcry caused the city to look at acquiring the station for
public use=2E Railroad officials have been open to making the building pub=
lic
property and have offered to hand over the station to the Johnson City
Development Authority, which is working on downtown revitalization=2E

Phase I of an environmental assessment on the site was scheduled to be
completed Monday=2E

=93Depending on the outcome of the assessment, JCDA may choose to accept
ownership of the building with the concurrence of the City Commission,=94
City Manager Mike West said in a memo to city leaders=2E =93Under the curr=
ent
offer, the JCDA must respond to the railroad by (Friday), the day after th=
e
City Commission meeting=2E=94
