Stranger than that, I'm from the east (but the place I visit most in 
the west is Emeryville, fairly convenient for modern & museum train 
watching, & listening to industrial switching at night).

Neither of the recommended books is available in the 
public-accessible regional catalog of books available for 
interlibrary loan in northern New York, alas, and I'm not quite 
curious enough to go farther at the moment.
