Region wins $3.2 million in grants

Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore won $3.2 million in transportation
enhancement grants, more than any other area in state, for hiking trails,
bicycle paths, historic renovations and preservation of natural
environments.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a record-setting $20.3 mill=
ion
statewide for 119 projects.

Three South Hampton Roads cities were awarded nearly $340,000 toward a
28-mile, multicity bike trail.

Here's where some of the money is going:

Norfolk =96 $250,000 to the Hampton Roads Maritime Heritage Foundation fo=
r
construction of the hull for the Pilot Schooner Virginia; and $189,000 fo=
r
the continued development of the Elizabeth River Trail along unused railr=
oad
land between the Atlantic City neighborhood, at the end of Colley Avenue,
and West Ghent.

Suffolk -- $50,000 for the design of a multiuse trail system on abandoned
railroad property connecting downtown to Chesapeake.

Franklin -- $25,000 for continuing pedestrian improvements along South Ma=
in
Street and Second Avenue and rehabilitation of the CSX freight depot into=
 a
visitor's center.

Chincoteague -- $501,000 to acquire the historic railroad dock and
construction of a waterfront boardwalk;

The projects can be financed with up to 80 percent federal money, with th=
e
rest from other public or private sources.
