A historical society for the Hanover Junction Train Station is in the works.

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will host public
informational meetings at 1:30 and 7 p.m. today at the old depot on Route
616 south of Seven Valleys.

The group would preserve the history of Hanover Junction and New Freedom
train stations as well as the Northern Central Railway and the rail
corridor, said Gene Myers, the Jefferson resident who brought the idea for
the society to the parks board.

"The history of the stations and the areas around them is slipping away. We
want to collect the memories of people who were around when the stations
were in operation or who remember hearing stories from other family members
who were living here at that time," Myers said.

Society members would be docents -- station tour guides -- leading walks
along the Heritage Rail Trail County Park or collecting historical
documents, artifacts and photos.

Today's meetings are the first step in the organization process, said Tom
Brant, executive director of York County Parks. "What we plan to do on
Monday is organize an executive committee that will take the first steps to
getting the society organized," Brant said.

The executive committee will decide on bylaws and membership fees, create a
newsletter, recruit volunteers, collect artifacts and schedule special
events.
