Ferry Farm, Orange depot get state grants
June 22, 2001 1:40 am
George Washington's boyhood home in Stafford County, a 91-year old train
depot in Orange County and a trail linking historic sites in the Northern
Neck are just a few of the spots benefiting from $20.2 million in state
grants announced yesterday.
The grants, approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board during its
morning meeting in Richmond, primarily fund transportation enhancements and
historic preservation.
[EDITED]
The Virginia Department of Transportation received 204 grant applications
this year asking for $79.2 million. The money awarded yesterday will support
119 new and ongoing projects.
Other grants in the area include:
$225,000 to restore a train station and to add a bike and pedestrian trail
to the entrance of Montpelier, Madison's boyhood home in Orange County.
$102,000 for Fauquier County to buy land for a one-mile trail connecting the
existing Warrenton Branch Greenway Trail with Lord Fairfax Community College
in Warrenton. The money will not pay for the trail's construction.
$300,000 to renovate unused space in Culpeper's depot for use as a
multipurpose community facility.
