I checked my atlas. Besides the current NS (ex-N&W) line from Martinsville to Winston-Salem, another (now abandoned) line came into Madison from the southeast. That line, an ex-Atlantic & Yadkin RR branch came off the A&Y at Stokesdale and ended at Madison. The line to Madison came off an east-west A&Y line that was later operated by Southern RR but is now abandoned. The east-west line went from Greensboro to Rural Hall, crossing the N&W at Walnut Cove.
This is all based on looking at the atlas, so take it with a grain of salt.
