110-year-old railroad structure
nominated for national register

AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- A little red-and-white railroad depot,
vintage 1891, has been nominated for inclusion in the National
Register of Historic Places.

The Ohio Historical Society announced the nomination Tuesday of
the station in Copley Township.

When it was about to be torn down in 1974, the Copley Historical
Society was formed to rescue it. The station's present location is
next to tracks now operated by the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway.

``Several trains still go by a day,'' said Andre Martin-Sams, the
president of Copley Historical Society. ``We stand there and wave
and yell at the engineers when we are having a meeting or a picnic.
They think we're crazy.''

The National Register is the nation's official list of places worthy of
preservation. Properties listed on the register are significant in
American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture.

Although the register is a program of the National Park Service, it is
administered at the state level.

The 16-by-40-foot depot is the only remaining Pittsburgh, Akron &
Western Railroad depot in Summit County and the only station
along a 169-mile route that has been preserved much in its original
form, according to the National Register nomination.

Ohio Historical Society spokesman Tom Wolf said Tuesday it may
be three months before the federal government confirms whether the
site will be accepted on the National Register.

The depot has a window on the side next to the tracks where the
stationmaster used to peer out to see an approaching train down the
line. Passenger service ended in 1951.

The Copley Historical Society last year provided a new foundation
for the depot. Now the group is seeking about $3,200 in grants for
an exterior restoration project. Eventually, the local historical society
hopes to put its archives and exhibits in the station.
