It is not generally well known that the LIRR operated direct rail
service from Manhattan before the opening of Penn Station.  In
essence, the current Essex Street station on the J/M/Z lines was the
first Manhattan rail terminus of the LIRR; the next was Chambers
Street. Penn Station is really the LIRR's third Manhattan terminal.

The route was quite direct -- it followed the route of the current J/Z
to East New York, headed out Jamaica Avenue to the Chestnut Street
Connection, and down the ramps to the Atlantic Branch of the LIRR. At
Woodhaven Junction, trains headed up the ramp to the NYW&RB right of
way at Ozone Park.

Trains did not stop at East New York" on the LIRR, but rather East New
York on the BRT on the current J/Z line. If you look at the current
subway map, trains turned south off of Fulton St between the
present-day stations at Norwood and Crescent.
