Re: (rshsdepot) B&O Railroad Museum

rshsdepot
There will never be a rail tunnel built but one for cars may be possible. SI
does not have any or enough industry on it to support such a project. You
said some traclks were being cleared? Not enough as brand new roadbed, ties
and welded rail would be needed plus a new signal system. Cross Harbor RR in
Greenville would oppose the project as it would shut them down for good.
Besides, I have not read in any of the NY area papers of the line being
readied for this project which has been silent for months. Clearing tracks
may be for a new indutry possibily coming there requesring rail access,
nothing more.

NYC did once have rail access to West 72 Street and 60 Street that Conrail
did away with in 1979. CR abandoned the line totally than improve it as well
as totally abandoning the east-west Maybrook Line crossing the Poughkeepsie
Bridge, an excellent route with no hight restrictions. CR moved at tax payer
expense all New England freight to Selkirk and back south again on Hudson
and New Haven Shoreline route than across Poughkeepsie Bridge that was
hundreds of miles shorter. Here is a bridge still standing that can be
rebuilt
and reused in a short time and a Fantasy Island tunnel that never existed?
Oh yeas, and then there is opposition to in in NJ by the small towns who
will claim project benefits NYC than NJ, but so does Gothals Bridge. Yes,
but these are cars where people spend money in NJ, not as they claim the
train will cause noise and polution. Ah, remember the Tappan Zee Rail Bridge
project a decade ago that was to route some Port Jervis trains to While
Plains but not Grand Central or Penn Station? What ever happened to this
project? It died after the elections were over as did Lackawanna Cut-Off and
West Shore revival projects.

These projects are always "Easier said than done". Seeing is always more
believing than hearing.
