Re: (erielack) Steamtown Images--September 12, 2013 (C3296 thru C3300)

Interesting series, 3295 through 3300, single track with sidings, classic water tank, rows of houses and small business against a mountain backdrop. Same date as the ferry shots from today, but Bunnell instead of Anneman, and in colder country. It has the look to me of New Milford, Pa.,. on the old line. In negative C3300 on the distant depot there is a sign board. Perhaps in time a lupe or higher-res scan of this neg could bring out enough distinctive letters to determine for sure.

Interesting to me, as well, are the stock cars. Lackawanna didn't own many stock cars, just 50 of these 50000-series with truss roads built by Keyser Valley late in the 1890s. But who's moving livestock in freezing weather?

These photos are some of the best illustrations to surface so far showing Lackawanna's regular practice of moving less-than-carload coal in stock cars by filling in the slats and covering the doors.

These stock cars were replaced by 100 more modern cars built by Keyser Valley in 1925 (just after the wood cabooses), of which more than 70 were marked and slatted for coal service when needed, and possibly more during WWII. These cars were very similar to the old Central Valley models in HO scale.  Perhaps some of these will surface in later negatives.

Great stuff, Pat.                   ....Mike Del Vecchio
