Re: (erielack) Steamtown Images--September 10, 2013 (C3286 thru C3290)

Was just looking at 3289 and found it even more interesting than the glance this morning. This is the Chatham side of Madison. We've seen previously some 1915 scenes of the new Chatham station on the new elevation. What is shown here on the right side is the ramp from the old grade through Madison to the new grade in Chatham, temporary track. Train crews of this era probably had to endure many speed restrictions as temporary connections and shoe-fly alignments were built as part of the many relocations in the first 20 years of the 20th Century.

It would be interesting to see how the contractors handled the grade separating in Madison proper, as the new grade is very close to and sitting on the original grade in spots, making shoe-fly trackage necessary.

I should have added that the remnant of one of the gates appears to be laying onthe ground in 3288, the reason for which may also be the reason for thephotography. The muddy roads in pre-pavement days must have made crossing arailroad very difficult to sit though. We know how annoying potholes are todaywith our modern suspension systems. Imagine ridding in the muddy ruts andbumping on and off of crossing timbers.

The 3287 neg is also Hoboken, a grand view showing that elegant clocktowersitting over the trainshed.

The 3288, '89 and '90 are the east side of Madison on the old grade, one ofthemshowing that sharp curve. The hoppers and photographer's train in thedistancemay actually be sitting on the new line that is today's NJTransit, underconstruction in this view. That crossing should be Kings Road.

Very interesting, that old line, as it had a couple of sharp curves, andI'vewondered if there is some discussion in the chief engineer's files abouttheoperating challenges in Madison due to those curves, and the expense ofthecrossing watchmen who protected them. Some of it is visible today inbackyards, while some is completely erased. The sattelite view shows thetree-lines sort ofindicate the old grade that curved so much that the line wason the shoulder oftoday's main street. When initially built, the Morris & Essexto save money wasconnecting plots of land that were donated. The old gradetraversed the Samsonestate, crossing Kings Road twice in the process. Truesdaletried to straightenthat out where possible.
