Re: (erielack) South Paterson

Service ended on the Erie Main Line through downtown Passaic on 1 April 1963. The ETT(#4A) issued on that day still shows the Main Line, even though it was severed on that day. At that point the Boonton Branch was still intact, and the Erie Main Lines were shown as being re-routed over the Boonton Branch between Bergen Jct. and Paterson Jct., and then on the Newark Branch from Paterson Jct. to XW. For the nearly seven month time period between 1 April and 27 October 1963, the portion of the Boonton Branch between Bergen Jct. and Paterson Jct. hosted all of the Erie Main Line trains as well as all of the Boonton Line trains. Paterson Jct. even hosted the Newark Branch trains for a short stretch.

The re-routing of the Boonton Branch onto the Greenwood Lake at Mountain View occurred on 27 October 1963 - ETT#6. Following the removal of the track around Garrett Mountain to make way for I-80, the West Paterson Spur did remain in place for a few years. The ETT (#1) issued 28 April 1968 still shows the Spur in the station list section of the timetable. It shows it as going from Paterson Jct. to West Paterson, nominally 1 mile. The ETT(#2) issued 27 April 1969 no longer shows the West Paterson Industrial Spur. However, I can tell you from having ridden through Paterson Jct., myself, for the first time in late 1969, that the turnout and at least part of the spur were still intact. I don't know when the spur was fully removed, but I do recall seeing the Broad Street overpass being removed in the mid-70s. Route 20 (later renumbered to Route 19) was not built from the GSP to I-80 until later in the 70s.
