Re: (erielack) ES99/SE98

After the 1950's, CNJ had become, in practical terms, a terminal carrier (in
more ways than one), with a longest freight haul of approx. 180 miles (vs an
industry average haul of 511 miles in 1972). In this respect, it was even
worse off than the moribund New Haven, with a Boston-Maybrook haul of 270
miles. With a preponderance of inbound loads, it was also a terminating
carrier.

Don't forget that CNJ trustee Robert Timpany had decided by this point to
focus CNJ efforts on their real money-maker - the vast amount of local
business, particularly the chemical industries. The CNJ was being turned
into a terminal railroad, and the joint EL/CNJ train was a primary outlet to
western interchanges.
