Re: (erielack) Erie Railroad or Railway?
Frank,
The New York & Lake Erie (the original chartered name of the RR in 1832.) operated as the Erie Railway from 1861 to 1878 when it emerged from bankruptcy in 1861. 1861-1878 were the years the infamous Daniel Drew, Jim Fisk & Jay Gould controlled the railroad. It went bankrupt again in 1878 & emerged as the New York Lake Erie & Western until it went bankrupt in the panic of 1893 when the reorganized company emerged in 1895 as the Erie Railroad which name it kept until the 1960 merger.

One comment on the section of the new BR&P Vol. 4 book - it's entitled "ERIE
RAILWAY". During this period (1940s-1950s), wasn't it the Erie RAILROAD? Or
am I wrong on this?
You're correct Paul, Erie Railroad Company
