I wanted to pass on what a great weekend everyone had at this year's ELHS Annual in Valparaiso...

After a rainy Thursday, Friday's weather turned sunny and pleasant, which remained throughout the weekend...Satuurday ELHS was treated to a charter ride on the Hoosier Valley in North Judson behind restored EL S2 #310 who took the train from North Judson up to Lacrosse on former C&O track (about 10 miles), which today is owned and operated by shortline Chesepeake & Indiana...Attached is a shot of ELHS members photographing the train after the #310 was turned on the wye at Lacrosse and ready to head back south - The trains consist was EL caboose #C354; a NKP caboose; a Long Island ping-pong commuter coach; an open air car, and another caboose.

An enlightening program on Saturday afternoon was provided by Keith Robbins, former EL Marion Division Chief Dispatcher who worked through CR, and recently retired from NS - Keith provided an overview of the challeges of operating the Marion Division from Kent to Chicago as well as the Dayton Branch, including how operations worked over the Division; how trains were made up and blocked at Marion; as well as other operating characteristics unque to the Marion Division part of the EL.

The Saturday-night banquet was held at the Strongbow Inn in Valparaiso - After dinner, presentations were provided by Mark Llanuza who provided a dynamic look at the EL in the great Chicago area, and the entual demise and transitions of change that occurred after Conrail. Mark's presentation followed a brief presentation by Sandra Bachmann Burroughs, widow of the late Craig Burroughs who was instrumental in starting up the Erie Western.

Paul Cappalloni announced that next year's 2013 Annual is tentatively scheduled for Buffalo.

It was good seeing everyone this past weekend - the only downside is that there never seems to be enough time to catch up w/everyone, but I hope everyone had a safe drive or flight home...
