Re: (erielack) Western Meeting? West end helpers?(2)

Well, Steve, I can't think of any pushers as a regular assignment (like
Scranton) but if u had 4 RS-3s on a 'dragup' from Riverbed yard to North Randall
and then got a red signal at the C&P diamonds, you'd NEVER get staarted without
help - but that'd probly be an engine sent from 55th Street.
In the time I worked as operator at SN, all the trains made it over the hump
at Johnsons siding on their own. It was a case of assigning enuf power at Kent
or Meadville.

To answer your second question, and speaking of what I know of parts of
the
Mahoning in/around Youngstown westward to Ken, I'm not aware of any
pushers
in regular service there, although someone like Steve T. might shed some
further light on operations...

.....................
In EL days, I know of no pushers assigned on the Mahoning Divn strictly for
pusher duties. The closest that I can recall is the Hi Di crew (or was it
Hy Dy) at Gowanda. That local was specifically designed to switch
industries at night while the two trains (one in each direction) ran on the
B&SW.

The local collected cars from the B&SW trains and distributed them but it
also assisted the eastbound up Collins Hill and the westbound up Dayton
Hill. The local was powered with a GP-7 but was called on to assist nearly
every day. Perhaps Mr. Heckman could chime in here as he worked the B&SW.

Other than that, no regular pushers were used. Most every day a westbound
drag out of the P&LE would need help through Youngstown. The drag would
have one or two BLW or Lima switchers (Limas were preferred as they were
good luggers and would MU). Usually the Depot Crew or the NK Yard Crew could
be found on the rear end from Himrod or the depot to Westlakes or
Worthington Streets. (Walt--input please).
