Re: (erielack) Latest Diamond - Single E-units on passenger trains

Pat,

I'm not certain of the exact date but I took a photo in 1965 of I believe the
817 at Dover NJ with the port holes removed and with the maroon stripe minus the
yellow stripes above, below, and through the maroon band.

Rich,

This still comes as a bit of a surprise to me. It only seems like every
picture of an EL through train I have seen (note: I don't have the
Through Passenger Service books) always had more than one E-8.
The one on the cover of the Diamond was the first picture of a
single E-8 I have seen.

On another note...when were the side panels on the E units replaced,
thus removing the port holes?

Paul,

I was given some slides to copy about 20 years ago from a prominent photographer

from Kansas. In 1969 he photographed #5 and #6 in Indiana and western Ohio about

a dozen times. More than half of the time the trains had a single E8.

Rare occurrence. It was almost always a pair of E8s (and in rare instances,
3 units)

Since units on EL business trains were VERY rare. It was almost always 833
and 825 together powering the usual consist of Spirit of Youngstown, 3, and
300.
