And since we're an economy driven now by foreign imports, today's railroads are primarily transporting... containers... of goods from China across the US. Local business? What's that?

Going back to the EL, in theory the EL could have survived as a primarily intermodal long-hauler. It was already heading in that direction before CR. Not to beat the proverbial dead horse, but had there been the proper "planetary alignment of economic factors," there could still be a vibrant EL today. Clearances for double-stacks? Not a problem, considering how the other "big roads" today spend government dollars to improve their lines.

Ah well, such it is to dream....
