Re: (erielack) Re: Refrigerator cars at Wadsworth's Ohio Match

Joe,

We always used to use Ohio Blue Tip matches. Are they still producing the
matches there in Wadsworth? Thanks.

As a Wadsworth native, I can tell you that yes, refrigerator cars were
used
at "The Match" to ship Ohio Blue Tip matches. In the 70's, when I was a
teen who passed the Match on a daily basis, it was not at all uncommon to
see orange refrigerator cars spotted at the docks.

The other industries mentioned would not have used these cars. The
Bearfoot
Sole (note the correct spelling here- WHS is "Home of the Grizzlies")
received coal inbound for a time, as did its predecessors, but did not
ship
outbound. "The Brickyard" used damage-control boxcars, but not
refrigerators, to ship the fragile bricks and tiles. IMC received inbound
covered hopperes of various chemicals and such, and shipped out by truck.

Remember too, that The Match was bought by Hunt Wesson Foods in 1958. By
the early 60's they were using surplus factory space as warehouse space.
That might also account for the URTX cars.
